Takeda Takes Aim at Shire

Takeda Takes Aim at Shire

Big Pharma deals are making a comeback. Or so it seems from the speculation around Shire plc (NASDAQ: SHPG). Japanese drug maker Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. (OTCQB: TKPYY) has been buzzing around the UK-based Shire for nearly a month, making bid after bid. It seemed to begin on April 16, when Shire sold its oncology business to the French drug maker Servier, for $2.4 billion in cash. In 2017, the 0ncology business generated revenues of $262 million. The total consideration represents a revenue multiple of 9.2x 2017 revenues. The acquisition gives Servier a direct commercial presence in the United States and boosts its presence in cancer. Servier’s products will be commercialized in the... Read More »

Humana Adds Physicians in Florida

Humana Adds Physicians in Florida

Humana (NYSE: HUM) hasn’t made a lot of waves in the Physician Medical Group sector. Its larger managed care rival, UnitedHealth Group’s Optum (NYSE: UNH), spent approximately $8.2 billion on two large physician practice acquisitions in 2017 alone. There’s also the distraction of acquisition talks with one of the world’s largest retailers, Walmart (NYSE: WMT), which were revealed by The Wall Street Journal in April 2018. While those talks are ongoing, Humana is honing its Medicare and Medicare Advantage services with the recent acquisition of Family Physicians Group based in Orlando, Florida. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it’s a safe bet they were... Read More »

PE Firms Join to Form Home Health Care Giant

PE Firms Join to Form Home Health Care Giant

Consolidation isn’t a novel concept in the healthcare market, although it has been slow to arrive for some. The Home Health & Hospice sector has experienced a few jolts in the past six months, as three publicly traded giants merged or were split up. Now the private equity side has sent a shock wave through this sector, pulling together three separate platform companies into a major contender. Blue Wolf Capital Partners, which has backed both Great Lakes Caring and National Home Health Care for the past two years, joined with Kelso & Company to acquire Jordan Health Services from Palladium Equity Partners, LLC. Financial terms were not disclosed. Upon closing the transaction... Read More »

It just added five more in and around the Fresno, California metropolitan area. March Added One Mega-Deal, and Saw Another One Halted

After a busy M&A month in February, with 125 deals reported, March didn’t disappoint. Preliminary results show deal volume equaled the previous month’s total. The figures look good, in the face of the recent stock market swings, the Trump administration’s talk of trade wars and cancelling trade deals. But a look back to March 2017 shows this month’s deal volume is down 19% compared with the 155 deals logged then. And that wase in the face of the Trump administration’s efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Check out the April issue of Health Care M&A News for the deal volume and value charts, by sector. We’re not saying this year’s healthcare market is lacking in... Read More »
