Boston Scientific Buys Claret Medical

The deals keep coming from Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE: BSX). The medical device maker announced its sixth deal so far this year on July 20. The latest target is privately held Claret Medical, Inc., based in Santa Rosa, California. Claret developed and commercialized the Sentinel Cerebral Embolic Protection System, which is used to protect the brain during certain interventional procedures, primarily during transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) replacement. It is the only device to protect patients against the risk of stroke. The Sentinel System received CE Mark in 2014 and FDA clearance in 2017. Investor interest in physician medical groups ramped up significantly in 2018, with 55 transactions announced in the first quarter, followed by 53 deals in the second quarter. The second quarter deals represent 29% of the total of 184 announced in the previous 12 months. Deal volume slipped 4% compared with the previous quarter but posted a 61% increase versus the same quarter a year earlier. Healthcare Deal Volume Rose 8% in Q2:18

With 462 deals announced in the second quarter, healthcare deal volume was up 8% compared with the 427 transactions announced in the previous quarter, according to our Deal Search Online database. Deal volume was higher than the same quarter in 2017, up 21%% compared with the 383 deals reported then. Healthcare deal volume in the last two quarters has grown stronger, with both quarters in 2018 rising above 425 deals. Heavy deal volume has become the “new normal,” and judging by the most recent five quarters, the lower range begins around 380 transactions per quarter. The Behavioral Health Care sector has been on a hot streak for more than three years now. In 2018, the pace may be picking up even more. In the first half of the year, 34 transactions were announced, compared with 29 in the first half of 2017. Prices for these deals, which are primarily between private equity firms and/or not-for-profit entities, are scarce. Specialty CROs Are the Latest Trend in Services Targets

Contract research organizations (CROs) were huge targets in 2017, with four of the sector’s 10 biggest deals bringing in $22.9 billion, combined. The CRO market has cooled in 2018, but interesting new trends pop up now and then. The latest is the trend toward specialty CROs, which focus on specific areas such as diseases of the central nervous system. In one week in July, two such CROs have traded hands. The first, on July 9, was Oculos Clinical Research, a CRO based in Tampa, Florida that focuses on ophthalmology. Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Otsuka Holdings (OTC: OTSKY), announced back-to-back deals in early July, in which it entered a new field, and bolstered one of its existing segments. Otsuka’s research areas are in psychiatric and neurological diseases, hematological cancers, and kidney, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases. What a quarter it was. Even with preliminary data, the numbers of deals and dollars spent in the second quarter of 2018 are impressive. The quarter began with a bang in April (176 deals), settled in May (136 deals) and slowed in June (122 deals). That still adds up to 432 transactions reported in the second quarter, up 1% compared with the first quarter, and 13% better than the same quarter in 2017.
