The Other Services sector dominated the dollar side of deal making, accounting for 60% ($68.2 billion) of spending. Q1:18 Health Care M&A Stays Strong

Health care merger and acquisition activity in the first quarter of 2018 kept pace with the previous quarter in 2017. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2017, deal volume increased 1%, to 386 transactions. However, deal volume was down 12% compared with the same quarter the year before. Combined spending in the first quarter reached $112.9 billion, a decrease of 2% compared with the nearly $115.0 billion spent in the previous quarter, according to HealthCareMandA.com. First, the easy news. Deal volume in the first quarter of 2018 was on par with the previous quarter’s total of 380 deals. Preliminary data show 378 transactions were announced in the first quarter, making for a decline of 1% that will likely be erased as more deal activity is uncovered. Compared with the first quarter in 2017, however, deal volume was down 14%, versus the 439 deals reported then. Deal value for the quarter is where the data deviates from previous norms.
