Varian Medical Makes Two Deals in May

Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) is on the move again. The Palo Alto, California-based medical device maker announced two deals in May 2019 targeting two very different companies. Varian (market cap $11.6 billion) designs, manufactures, sells and services medical devices and software products for treating cancer and other medical conditions. The earlier deal, announced on May 9, brought aboard privately held cardiac ablation firm Cyberheart, based in Sunnyvale, California, for an undisclosed amount. Labor shortages for physicians and nurses may heat up the medical staffing market in 2018. Through the first 10 days of February, three transactions for these service companies have been announced. Last year, 16 transactions targeting medical staffing services were made public, the highest number of deals in this segment since 2005 (19 deals) and 2004 (20). NorthStar Anesthesia Expands

The market for anesthesiology groups is hot this year, with 10 deals announced through mid-August. The latest was from NorthStar Anesthesia, a portfolio company of TPG Growth, which acquired Anesthesia Staffing Consultants of Bingham Falls, Michigan. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition expands NorthStar’s presence in the Midwest and increases its team of anesthesiologists and CRNAs to more than 1,600 providers working in nearly 150 facilities in 19 states.
