As healthcare companies and providers across the industry wrestle with staffing shortages and retention, staffing firms are looking to fill some of the gaps, thus driving M&A activity. According to our Deal Search Online database, there have been nine acquisitions focused on healthcare staffing firms so far this year, and that number will most likely grow.

If a price had been disclosed, Medical Solutions‘ takeover of C&A Industries, Inc. this month would surely be among the largest deals in this segment.

Medical Solutions, a portfolio company of TPG Growth, specializes in placing registered nurses in temporary travel assignments throughout the country. The target company provides staffing and recruiting services to a number of industries, including healthcare through Aureus Medical Group, the largest of its affiliates. Aureus’ healthcare staffing focuses on nursing, allied health, and advanced practice staffing solutions.

Medical Solutions’ partnership with C&A Industries follows its February 2018 acquisition of PPR, a travel nurse staffing and interim leadership solutions provider in the acute and post-acute care markets. This is the group’s second acquisition under TPG Growth.

However, based on disclosed price, AMN Healthcare Services, Inc.‘s (NYSE: AHS) acquisition of Advanced Medical Personnel Services, Inc. for $200 million back in April has been the largest so far in 2019.

Advanced Medical Personnel Services, a portfolio company of Clearview Capital since 2015, specializes in placing therapists and nurses in contract positions across multiple settings including hospitals, schools, clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and home health.  The company had recently launched a platform that serves the needs of children within large school districts through on-site and telehealth therapists, and AMN figured that was a valuable add-on for its services.

Health Carousel made a big splash earlier this year when it acquired Onyx M.D., a nationwide leading healthcare staffing company focused on placing physicians and advanced practice providers of all specialties in temporary assignments, temp to perm, and permanent positions. No prices were disclosed, naturally. Onyx M.D. will continue to operate under its own brand after the transaction and work with NEXTLocums, another Health Carousel staffing company. The combined revenues of Onyx and NEXTLocums would rank 13th on the latest Staffing Industry Analyst ranking.
