Health Carousel Taps into AI

Health Carousel, a healthcare staffing firm with over 1,000 workers under contract, has acquired the digital health platform Lucidity. The target’s technology platform connects physicians seeking part-time or temporary work directly with medical practices looking to fill open shifts, while also using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help providers and medical practices make better staffing decisions. Lucidity had previously raised funding from Sustineo Ventures. Financial terms were not disclosed. Lucidity will continue to operate as a standalone company under its own brand after the transaction. AMN Healthcare Services, Inc. (NYSE: AHS), a healthcare solutions and staffing services company, has acquired Advanced Medical Personnel Services, Inc. for $200 million. Advanced Medical Personnel specializes in placing therapists and nurses in contract positions across multiple settings including hospitals, schools, clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and home health. AMN purchased Advanced Medical for the company’s recently launched telehealth platform for delivery of speech therapy to children in large school districts across the country. As we researched data across 13 sectors for our upcoming publication, The Healthcare M&A Report, First Quarter 2019, an interesting trend in the “Other Services” sector popped up. This sector includes areas ancillary healthcare services such as ambulatory surgery centers, urgent care clinics, contract research organizations (CROs), healthcare staffing companies, specialty pharmacies, among others. Contract research organizations (CROs), like contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), have been popular targets for private equity firms and strategic buyers for years. The deals seem to come in waves, and the healthcare M&A market may be in for a tsunami this year. In 2013, some 20 transactions for CRO/CDMO targets were announced, with some hefty price tags attached. Royal DSM paid $1.95 billion to buy Patheon. In 2017, our annual Health Care Services Acquisition Report, the Other Services sector featured six particularly active subsectors. Last year we had 13. Other Services includes areas such as specialty pharmacy, urgent care and ambulatory surgery centers and medical staffing companies. All are experiencing significant changes. In 2017 we reported 153 deals in Other Services, compared with 179 in 2018. A new notable field includes deals involving medical transportation services. Charles River Laboratories Purchases France-based Citoxlab

Charles River Laboratories International (NYSE: CRL), a global early-stage contract research organization (CRO), announced it has purchased the French non-clinical lab Citoxlab. Based in Evreux Cedex, France, the target specializes in regulated safety assessment services, non-regulated discovery services, and medical device testing. The deal cost Charles River $510 million, roughly 13.8x EBITDA for Citoxlab.
