Ophthalmology Groups Are Still Hot Targets

It’s been an incredibly busy January, and deal volume continues to pile up. Investor interest in physician groups has swelled in particular, as we reach 36 deals and counting. The hottest specialty so far has been for ophthalmology practices, which have accounted for seven deals so far this month.  It’s a trend that has spilled over from 2020, when ophthalmology deals accounted for 22% of the 189 Physician Medical Group transactions announced last year. Ophthalmology Groups Are Still Selling

Despite the effects of COVID-19 on physician groups, investors are still acquiring ophthalmology groups, especially in the third quarter, according to DSO. Just last week, EyeSouth Partners acquired Retina Associates of Middle Georgia (RAMG) for an undisclosed sum. Based in Macon, Georgia, RAMG provides treatment for the retina, macula, and vitreous diseases at two clinics in the middle Georgia area. The practice has three physicians. The affiliation represents EyeSouth’s eighth in the state of Georgia and eighteenth affiliation overall. It’s not surprising to find new deals weeks or months down the line, but EyeCare Partners announced a bunch of transactions from the second quarter — five to be exact — last week. EyeCare added Vitreous Retina Macula Specialists of New Jersey (Somerset, New Jersey), Foothills Eye Care (King, North Carolina ), 2020 Vision Care (St. Louis, Missouri), The Retina Clinic (Mine Hill, New Jersey), and Patel Retina Institute (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania). EyeCare Partners Grows Its National Platform

EyeCare Partners’ acquisition marathon shows no signs of slowing down. Ever since FFL Partners formed the group with the acquisition of Clarkson Eyecare in April 2015, EyeCare Partners (ECP) has expanded rapidly, consolidating smaller firms to grow a national network. Last week, the group purchased Nationwide Vision from Refac Optical Group, a portfolio company of Acon Investments. Nationwide is a full-service vision care provider operating 89 optometry offices throughout Arizona and Florida. This acquisition brings EyeCare Partners’ network range to up to 450 locations nationwide.
