Kindred and Select Medical Swap LTACs

It’s getting so you can’t tell the players without a program. On February 18, Kindred Healthcare Inc. (NYSE: KND) and Select Medical Holdings Corporation (NYSE: SEM) announced they were trading nine long-term acute care (LTAC) hospitals in various markets. Kindred got the larger part of the trade, acquiring the operations of five of Select Medical’s LTACs for a total of 233 beds. They are located in Indianapolis, Indiana; San Antonio, Texas; Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Hospital M&A Keeps Pace with Medicaid Expansion

Hospitals in states that expanded Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act typically are healthier, financially, than those in states that have not expanded that coverage. What about hospital mergers and acquisitions in the expanded states, compared with those that haven’t expanded Medicaid? With only two years of data, it’s too soon to spot a trend, on the surface. Effective in April 2010, the ACA provided states the option to receive federal Medicaid matching funds to cover adults with incomes up to 133% of the Federal Poverty Level to get an early start on the 2014 Medicaid expansion. Hospital M&A Revs Up in February

Two days into February 2016 and we’ve recorded four hospital transactions. Considering there were only two in all of January, this action is impressive. One was a straight real estate deal from Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT II, Inc., which paid $33.9 million for Sherman, Texas-based Heritage Park Surgical Hospital and Visionary Medical Imaging. Both facilities were built in 2005. The hospital has 57,576 square feet, and was renovated in 2010 to become a full-service surgical hospital. VMI is an 8,055 square foot facility. The hospital acquisition market declined in the fourth quarter of 2015, falling 31% from the third quarter’s total of 32 deals. The 22 publicly announced hospital acquisitions in Q4:15 were also 29% lower than the 31 deals announced in the same quarter in 2014. The largest acquisition in the fourth quarter to come with a disclosed price was the acquisition of Al Noor Hospitals Group plc, based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, by the South African hospital operator Mediclinic International Ltd. for $2.3 billion.
