The eHealth sector had a record 2019, with 222 deals now on the books, a roughly 9% increase over 2018’s volume, and $18.3 billion in spending. That momentum has carried over to the first month of 2020, with 19 eHealth deals in January and $1.8 billion in announced spending, according to our Deal Search Online database. The eHealth sector hit the ground running in 2020. In the first two and a half weeks 15 eHealth transactions have been announced, and we expect it to easily eclipse January 2019’s deal volume of 16. It’s already matched last month’s total count of 15. The headline deal belongs to Teladoc Health, Inc.’s (NYSE: TDOC) acquisition of InTouch Health for $600 million, split into $150 million in cash and $450 million of Teladoc common stock. 2020 has just begun, which means it’s time to look back at the healthcare M&A landscape of 2019. Just three days into the new year, nearly 1,780 deals are already on the books for 2019. More deals will turn up as we search our many sources, but the number likely won’t top the record of 1,900-plus set in 2018. Thanks to the multi-billion-dollar deals announced in the Biotech and Pharmaceutical sectors, 2019 will set a new spending record.
