Behavioral Health Care M&A Recap 2015

Behavioral health is a growing national concern, finally, and investors are responding to the growing public attention. Mergers and acquisitions in this healthcare sector rose more than 46% last year, to more than 40 transactions. The two publicly traded, pure-play companies in this area, AAC Holdings (NYSE: AAC) and Acadia Healthcare Company (NASDAQ: ACHC), lead the list of acquirers (six and five announced deals, respectively). WellSpan Ups Its Behavioral Health Offerings

The Behavioral Health Care sector has seen plenty of mergers and acquisitions this year. Deal volume is currently up 38% (33 deals) compared with 2014’s full-year total of 24 transactions. With six deals announced in December, the sector will close out the year on a high note. One deal has been in the works almost all year, and will become effective on January 1, 2016. WellSpan Health, a five-hospital system based in York, Pennsylvania, and Philhaven, a mental and behavioral health agency of the Lancaster Conference of the Mennonite Church USA, finalized their affiliation plans on December 17. Behavioral Health M&A Picks Up in 2015

Behavioral health care is a big but fragmented business in the United States. In 2015, it got bigger, but less fragmented. M&A volume is up 25% in 2015, with 30 publicly announced transactions, higher than any year since 2000 (33 deals). Spending on this year’s deals is currently $1.1 billion (not a record). The latest deal is typical of the sector. NcgCare, the recently created parent company of Richmond, Virginia-based National Counseling Group, acquired Turning Point Family CARE, PLLC, which has two offices in Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina. Netsmart Picks Behavioral Health EHR

Netsmart Technologies, which provides post-acute electronic health records and technology for health and human services providers, acquired Little Rock, Arkansas-based Lavender & Wyatt Systems, which provides electronic health records and related services for behavioral health providers. LSWI clients will now have access to Netsmart’s CareRecord EHR optons and arange of other solutions and services that help to deliver quality care and maximize operational efficiencies.
