Two Illinois-based health systems have announced they are merging. Edward-Elmhurst Health, a not-for-profit health system, is joining NorthShore University HealthSystem, another not-for-profit system located in the Chicago market.
Edward-Elmhurst Health is a 736-bed system that includes two hospitals and one behavioral health hospital and has more than 60 outpatient locations across Chicago’s west and southwest suburbs. The hospitals are Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health. Edward-Elmhurst generated $1.14 billion in revenue in 2020 and $62.27 million in EBITDA. NorthShore, for its part, generates around $1.5 billion in annual revenues, according to the company’s website.
The merger is expected to close at the end of 2021, pending regulatory approvals. The combined organization will include 25,000 team members, serve an area with over 4.2 million residents, and bring together 6,000 physicians through an expansive geographic network of nine hospitals and more than 300 ambulatory facilities throughout the region.
In addition to the merger, the organizations have also announced the creation of two community investment funds, with each organization committing $100 million to their respective communities.
NorthShore last announced a deal just a little over a year ago, adding Northwest Community Healthcare, which operates a single acute care hospital, Northwest Community Hospital (424 beds), as well as an ambulatory care center and physician offices. That deal closed on January 1, 2021.
