In our latest LevinPro HC Stat of the Week, we’re highlighting the top U.S. health systems by M&A activity over the past five years. HCA Healthcare has been the most active investor in the healthcare market since 2021, announcing 14 deals. Although HCA has added 14 hospitals to its network, the health system has largely focused on building its outpatient care network, announcing deals such as the $594 million acquisition of MD Now Urgent Care in 2022.
West Virginia University Health System has been the most active academic medical center, adding seven hospitals to its network, including Harrison Community Hospital and Barnesville Hospital in Ohio, expanding its reach outside its primary home state.
Based on hospital count alone, Prime Healthcare Services has been the most aggressive, adding 24 hospitals to its network across the United States. Its most notable deal was announced in 2024 when it paid $370 million for nine struggling Illinois-based hospitals from Ascension.
