One of the largest municipal health systems in the United States is moving ahead, officials in New York City announced on December 29. Maimonides Health, a Brooklyn-based health system with three hospitals and more than 80 outpatient sites, is joining NYC Health + Hospitals. The merger is supported by a $2.2 billion grant from New York Governor Hochul and public support from the current New York Mayor Adams.

According to its most recent consolidated financial audit, Maimonides Health generated $1.6 billion in net patient services revenue. But according to local reporting, the health system has struggled financially for years. It has lost approximately $45 million in the first three quarters of 2025. By joining the public health care system, care provided by Maimonides facilities will be reimbursed at a higher rate by Medicaid, bolstering its financial position. More than 80% of Maimonides’ patients are insured by Medicaid and Medicare, according to a 2022 Community Services Plan.

NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest municipal health care delivery system in the United States, with more than 70 locations across New York City, including 11 hospitals, operating 5,000 beds.

The deal will also allow Maimonides Health’s facilities to enroll in Epic for its electronic health record capabilities. Officials expect the merger to be completed by April 1, 2026.
