Experian Health, the healthcare arm of Experian (LSE: EXPN) announced earlier this month that it acquired MyDirectHealth, a digital health firm. No financial terms were disclosed.

Companies like Experian Health that collaborate with hospitals and provide data support seem to be buying companies much like MyDirectHealth pretty frequently. MyDirectHealth develops digital care coordination solutions to help patients find the appropriate care provider. The company’s platform also offers patient engagement and outreach analytics, which Experian hopes to combine with its analytics platform to streamline healthcare administration.

Patient engagement platforms are definitely trending, according to our Deal Search Online database, as providers look for more meaningful ways to communicate with their patients beyond basic transactions. Patient engagement solutions help providers achieve the gold standard of every healthcare organization: reducing cost, improving health, and improving the patient experience.

Back in April, Computer Programs and Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPSI) acquired Get Real Health for $11 million, plus the promise of an earn-out payment of $14 million based on EBITDA performance.

Get Real Health provides a wide range of patient engagement and software tools for hospitals, physician practices, wellness companies, biotech and research companies, and health insurance companies.

With that acquisition, CPSI can offer patient engagement tools from Get Real Health’s platform, such as Instant PHR, a patient portal that promotes efficient collaboration between the patients and providers, and HBase, which combines clinical data and personal health data to provide a comprehensive health report. Get Real Health has established a presence in both domestic and international markets.

Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG), the medical device giant, also made a move into this sector in July. The company acquired Medumo for an undisclosed price.

Medumo’s patient engagement platform helps hospitals connect with their patients remotely via emails and text messages regarding referrals, pre-visit preparation, post-visit follow-up and more.

The acquisition would give Royal Philips a direct connection to Medumo’s partners such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Health and UPMC, among others.  Royal Philips will also most likely combine Medumo’s platform with Carestream Health’s diagnostic imaging services, which it had acquired the previous March.
