Humana Adds Physicians in Florida

Humana Adds Physicians in Florida

Humana (NYSE: HUM) hasn’t made a lot of waves in the Physician Medical Group sector. Its larger managed care rival, UnitedHealth Group’s Optum (NYSE: UNH), spent approximately $8.2 billion on two large physician practice acquisitions in 2017 alone. There’s also the distraction of acquisition talks with one of the world’s largest retailers, Walmart (NYSE: WMT), which were revealed by The Wall Street Journal in April 2018. While those talks are ongoing, Humana is honing its Medicare and Medicare Advantage services with the recent acquisition of Family Physicians Group based in Orlando, Florida. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it’s a safe bet they were... Read More »

PE Firms Join to Form Home Health Care Giant

Consolidation isn’t a novel concept in the healthcare market, although it has been slow to arrive for some. The Home Health & Hospice sector has experienced a few jolts in the past six months, as three publicly traded giants merged or were split up. Now the private equity side has sent a shock wave through this sector, pulling together three separate platform companies into a major contender. Blue Wolf Capital Partners, which has backed both Great Lakes Caring and National Home Health Care for the past two years, joined with Kelso & Company to acquire Jordan Health Services from Palladium Equity Partners, LLC. Financial terms were not disclosed. Upon closing the transaction... Read More »

Stat of the Week: Healthcare M&A Spending up 18% in 2017

The year hasn’t ended, and there are still two weeks to go in the fourth quarter of 2017. The holidays are already under way, with more on the horizon. Before we get too busy, here’s a quick look at where things stand in mid-December. Total healthcare mergers and acquisitions reached 1,467 deals as of December 14. That’s only 7% lower than the combined total for all of 2016, at 1,574 deals. Spending on these transactions is already higher. This year’s dollar volume currently stands at approximately $303.9 billion, up 18% compared with last year’s total of $256.7 billion. Much of the credit for the spending rise goes to the largest single transaction announced... Read More »

CVS, Aetna Lead a Potential Big-Deal Parade

The fourth quarter, and the month of December in particular, are usually busy times for mergers and acquisitions, and often when big deals are announced. With one month to go in Q4:17, the pace may be picking up. Deal volume through December 1 stood at 231 transactions (-39% to last year’s 379), and $19.6 billion (-49% vs. $38.6 billion in Q4:16). But late on December 3, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) and managed care giant Aetna (NYSE: AET) announced their $69 billion merger. More mega-deals are in the offing. Possibly. The CVS/Aetna deal was first reported in October by The Wall Street Journal, with talk of $200 to $205 per share for Aetna. The final price is $207 per share in cash and... Read More »

Deal of the Week: Concentra/Dignity Health

Even as it continues merger talks with the troubled hospital chain, Catholic Health Initiatives, Dignity Health sold its rehabilitation and occupational health division, U.S. HealthWorks for $753 million. The acquirer, Concentra Group Holdings, is jointly held by Select Medical Corporation (NYSE: SEM), Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe and minority equity shareholders including Cressey & Company. The combination will bolster both companies’ urgent care platforms as new payment models push for care delivery outside of hospital setting. Dignity Health will receive a 20% equity interest in the combined entity, valued at $238 million, and the remainder of the purchase price in... Read More »
