MEDNAX Makes 10

MEDNAX (NYSE:MD) hit the big 10 in August 2016, with its tenth acquisition of the year. The serial acquirer picked up privately-held Associated Anesthesiologists of Reno, P.C., the largest anesthesia practice in northern Nevada, offering anesthesia care across a broad range of subspecialties, including orthopedic, obstetric, pediatric and cardiac and critical care. Home Health’s Hot Summer Streak

With 38 deals so far in 2016, home health care continues to be a hot topic. Three deals were announced in the first week of August alone, with Dallas-based Epic Health Services being the acquirer for two of these deals. Epic Health Services, a portfolio company of Webster Capital, provides pediatric skilled nursing, therapy, developmental, enteral and respiratory services. On August 1st, the company announced the acquisition of Pediatric Special Care Inc., the only pediatric nursing and home medical equipment company in Michigan. Cantel Medical Adds Dental to Its Healthcare Disposables Segment

With five acquisitions in the infection prevention/disposables market since 2014, Cantel Medical (NYSE: CMN) is on a roll. The company, which provides infection prevention and control product and services, just announced its second medical device deal this year, buying Accutron Inc., a privately-held manufacturer of nitrous oxide delivery systems and single-use nasal masks. The $52.5 million acquisition will expand the dental portfolio of Crosstex International, Cantel’s Healthcare Disposables segment, adding a branded, single-use disposable product line. Pfizer Buys into Gene Therapy

Pfizer’s (NYSE: PFE) interest in the field of gene therapy just got real. The pharma giant just spent $193 million to pick up Bamboo Therapeutics Inc., a privately-held biotechnology company that focuses on therapies for rare and devastating central nervous system (CNS) and neuromuscular diseases. In the first quarter of 2016, Pfizer acquired 22% of Bamboo’s fully diluted equity for $43 million. On August 2, the company announced that it had acquired the remaining equity for an upfront payment of $150 million. Molina Adds Aetna & Humana MA Assets

Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Humana (NYSE: HUM) remain undaunted by the pending litigation from the U.S. Department of Justice, challenging their proposed $37 billion merger. The two companies announced they would sell certain Medicare Advantage (MA) assets to Molina Healthcare (NYSE: MOH) for a total estimated $117 million in cash for both transactions. The price is based on the estimated number of members in the plans involved in the transactions. Kite Pharma Soars with Two T-Cell Acquisitions

Kite Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ: KITE) has been busy lately, announcing two separate license deals in the last week of July. On July 25, it acquired the exclusive worldwide rights to technology that advances the development of off-the-shelf allogeneic T-cell therapies from renewable pluripotent stem cells, also known as the ATO system, in a deal with the University of California, Los Angeles. In connection with this agreement, Kite entered into a sponsored research agreement with UCLA to support ongoing preclinical research for the ATO system. LabCorp Ventures into Prenatal Testing

LabCorp (NYSE: LH), the world’s leading healthcare diagnostics company, has acquired Sequenom Inc. (NASDAQ: SQNM), a pioneer in non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for reproductive health, for a total purchase price of $371 million. In July of 2014, Sequenom purchased a license for non-invasive prenatal testing patents and applications from privately-held Mayo Medical Laboratories, and two months later it acquired intellectual property from privately-held Isis Innovation for non-invasive prenatal testing intellectual property.
