Who says good help is hard to find? Just about every healthcare provider in the United States, it seems.  The growing shortage of doctors and nurses, together with the recent near-record low U.S. unemployment rates, has brought the healthcare staffing services segment into sharp focus for investors. Through mid-November, 18 deals targeting these companies have been announced in 2018, compared with 16 in 2017 and 10 in all of 2016. Medical Staffing M&A Makes a Comeback

Labor shortages for physicians and nurses may heat up the medical staffing market in 2018. Through the first 10 days of February, three transactions for these service companies have been announced. Last year, 16 transactions targeting medical staffing services were made public, the highest number of deals in this segment since 2005 (19 deals) and 2004 (20). The most recent deal announcement came from Medical Solutions, a portfolio company of TPG Growth based in Omaha, Nebraska. RN Staffing Firm Sells for $88 Million

Cross Country Healthcare, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCRN) hasn’t announced an acquisition in more than a year. The company posted some rather soft numbers in Q1:17, owing to the slow pace of ramping up some new business wins in 2016. CEO William Grubbs told analysts on the following earnings call on May 4 that he still wasn’t satisfied with the results. What better remedy for slow organic growth than to make an acquisition? Medical Staffing Companies Attract Private Investors

Labor shortages in the healthcare industry aren’t a new topic. Earlier this year, the Association of American Medical Colleges warned that the United States could lose as many as 100,000 doctors by 2025, up to one-third of those being primary care physicians. A shortage of registered nurses has been discussed since 1965, by one account. That makes the market for medical staffing companies of particular interest to investors.
