Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) announced that it acquired Palmetto Primary Care Physicians (PPCP) for $111 million.

PPCP is one of the largest independent multi-specialty group practices in South Carolina. PPCP comprises more than 90 clinical providers with a wide range of expertise in primary and specialty care including endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology and physical therapy. The company employs more than 400 clinical and non-clinical staff throughout South Carolina and provides medical care for patients through 30 physician’s offices in four counties.

Founded in 1824 in Charleston, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the South, as well as the state’s only integrated academic health sciences center. Its clinical health system, MUSC Health, comprises 1,600 beds, more than 100 outreach sites, the MUSC College of Medicine, the physicians’ practice plan and nearly 275 telehealth locations. MUSC Health owns and operates eight hospitals situated in Charleston, Chester, Florence, Lancaster and Marion counties.

With the acquisition, PPCP will become a not-for-profit entity within the MUSC Health family. The acquisition went into effect on March 3, 2026. To date, this is the second Physician Medical Group (PMG) deal this year to have a disclosed price; Hartford Healthcare acquired Consulting Cardiologists for $3 million in January.

According to data captured in the LevinPro, this deal marks the 93rd PMG transaction of the year, and the eighth in the internal medicine specialty. There were 31 internal medicine transactions reported throughout 2025.

Since the start of the year, the most active internal medicine buyer has been Proactive MD, which has reported three transactions. PMG activity in 2026 accounts for almost 24% of the 400 healthcare transactions that have been announced, so far.
