Surgery Partners, a portfolio company of private equity firm Bain Capital, announced that it acquired multiple orthopedic practices to form Midwest Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Alliance (MOMA). 

Orthopedic Institute of Wisconsin is based out of three locations in Wisconsin and has 17 providers on staff. 

Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center S.C. is a physician ownership entity in Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital. It is based in North Charleston, South Carolina and is run by nine physicians. 

Orthopedic Specialists, LLC & ASMS Holdings, LLC are a physician ownership entity in The Surgery Center. Nothing else was disclosed. 

Innovative Pain Consultants is based in Wisconsin. No other information about the practice was disclosed. 

Great Lakes Anesthesia & Pain Specialists operates out of one Franklin, Wisconsin location. 

With seven locations across Wisconsin, Franklin Orthopedics is run by two physicians who rotate between the different office locations. 

Butler Orthopedics is based in Wisconsin. Nothing else regarding the practice was disclosed. 

The independent physician is Steven Nakata, M.D., S.C, who is based in Brookfield, Wisconsin. He is the only physician on staff. 

The Franklin, Wisconsin location of OrthoLazer was acquired. OrthoLazer provides orthopedic laser procedures to help reduce pain. There are seven providers on staff. 

Hyde Park Capital served as the exclusive investment banker to the physician-owned entities for this transaction. Husch Blackwell served as legal counsel to the physician-owned entities of MOMA. 

Founded in 2004 Surgery Partners is a leading operator of surgical facilities and ancillary services. It has more than 180 locations in 32 states, including ambulatory surgery centers, surgical hospitals, multi-specialty physician practices and urgent care facilities.  

Following the completion of MOMA’s formation, MOMA will be the premier Wisconsin based provider of general orthopedic care, joint replacement, sports medicine, physical therapy and interventional pain amongst other musculoskeletal services.  

According to data captured in the LevinPro HC database, this marks the 375th Physician Medical Group transaction of the year, and the 15th in the orthopaedic specialty. This also marks Surgery Partners’ fourth transaction of 2024, having added 16 other practices to its portfolio. The practices span New York, Texas and Wisconsin and add more than 35 physicians to its network.
