Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, announced that it acquired Mount Pleasant, South Carolina-based Southeastern Spine Institute (SSI) for an undisclosed price.

Since it was established in 1990, SSI has provided a wide range of spine procedures, including surgery and nonsurgical care, rehabilitation, pain management, physical therapy and advanced imaging. More than 50% of SSI’s patients are from outside the greater Charleston, South Carolina area. SSI is located in a 65,000-square-foot facility on the campus of East Cooper Medical Center. According to its website, the practice has six providers on staff.

Novant Health is a not-for-profit integrated system of more than 850 locations, including 19 hospitals, more than 700 physician clinics and urgent care centers, outpatient facilities and imaging and pharmacy services. The health network supports personalized healthcare for communities in North Carolina and South Carolina. In 2023, it reported revenues of $7.28 billion.

Steven Poletti, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon and founder of SSI, said the partnership with Novant “enables us to enhance the scope and accessibility of our services, bringing innovative and comprehensive spine care to even more patients.” Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This transaction is Novant Health’s first acquisition of 2025. In 2024, the company acquired two outpatient surgery centers and one urgent care center. The company also sold a 21-facility portfolio to Remedy Medical Properties and Kayne Anderson Real Estate.

According to data in the LevinPro HC database, this marks the third Physician Medical Group acquisition of 2025, and the first in the orthopedic specialty. In 2024, there were 20 orthopedic transactions announced, which is a 44% decrease from the 36 orthopedic deals announced in 2023.
