Oakland, California-based Kaiser Permanente announced that it has acquired its first ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in southern California.

The ASC, Antelope Valley Surgery Center, is a multispecialty outpatient center in Lancaster, California. The 12,500-square-foot ASC provides services including general surgery, gynecological cases, eye surgery, head and neck, podiatry, orthopedic and plastic surgery. It was originally opened more than 20 years ago and was most recently operated by SCA Health.

Kaiser Permanente is among the country’s largest not-for-profit health systems with 39 hospitals. Its operations span eight states coast to coast with roughly 13 million members who receive care through its integrated model. The organization reported $95.4 billion in operating revenue across 2022 as well as a $1.3 billion operating loss and a nearly $4.5 billion net loss.

“When we learned that the surgery center was set to close, we immediately knew that this would not only negatively impact our members but also put a strain on the entire community,” Suzy Ghazarossian, Kaiser Permanente interim senior vice president and area manager for the Antelope Valley, told the Antelope Valley Press. “After many months of planning through 2023, we took possession of this building in February of this year.”

The ASC was set to close in January 2024 but was purchased by Kaiser Permanente. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to data captured in the LevinPro HC database, this transaction represents the sixth ASC acquisition of 2024. There were 27 ASC acquisitions announced during 2023, and 28 announced during 2022.
