Sonic Healthcare announced this week that it agreed to pay CHF 117 million (approximately $131.7 million USD) for the acquisition of Dr. Risch

Dr. Risch is a Switzerland-based second-generation family business. Since its founding in 1970, the laboratory has developed into a leading partner in the field of laboratory medicine diagnostics and today has 16 networked competence centers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The company has about 650 employees. 

Founded in 1987, Sonic Healthcare is a global medical diagnostics company providing laboratory, pathology and radiology services. It has a presence in Australia, New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Ireland. According to its FY 2023 financial reports, Sonic Healthcare made revenues of A$8.2 billion, or approximately $5.4 billion USD. 

According to Sonic Healthcare, this transaction will be earnings-per-share accretive for 2025, and that the return on invested capital will significantly exceed its cost once infrastructure and operations savings are achieved. Sonic Healthcare expects the acquisition of Dr. Risch to close by March 31, 2024. 

This acquisition will expand Ginkgo’s gene editing service offerings for its customers. This transaction marks the 32nd Laboratories, MRI and Dialysis transaction of 2024, with 10 of them in the laboratories specialty. There were 125 Laboratories, MRI and Dialysis transactions reported during 2023, and 139 announced during 2022.
