Deerfield, Illinois-based Walgreens, a division of Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (WBA), and Pearl Health announced on September 12 a partnership to expand the retailer’s push into value-based care.

Walgreens will provide value-based care services to provider partners through the agreement with Pearl Health. The companies will help clinicians transition to value-based reimbursement, starting with Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Accountability and Community Health (ACO REACH) members.

Pearl Health is a technology company that helps independent physician practices participate in value-based care models.

Walgreens is included in the U.S. Retail Pharmacy and U.S. Healthcare segments of WBA, a holding company headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois that owns the retail pharmacy chains Walgreens and Boots, as well as several pharmaceutical manufacturing, wholesale and distribution companies. Operating almost 9,000 retail locations across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Walgreens serves nearly 10 million customers each day.

Walgreens will provide Pearl Health complementary services, including prescription fulfillment, medication adherence, immunizations, care gap closure and diagnostic testing. Walgreens will also work with providers to help patients discharged from the hospital to home.

With its acquisition of VillageMD, Shields Health Solutions and CareCentrix in 2021, followed by pharmacy assets from the now bankrupt Medly Pharmacy in February 2023, Walgreens has established itself as a leading partner in local, personalized care. The new partnership with Pearl Health allows Walgreens to reach more regions and patients and offer an even broader set of solutions to providers and health systems.
