EyeSouth Partners announced on November 15 that it purchased University Retina and Macula Associates (RUMA), marking the 530th Physician Medical Groups transaction of 2022. 

EyeSouth Partners is an eye care services organization and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. EyeSouth’s affiliate network consists of 34 practices with more than 275 doctors providing medical and surgical eye care services at more than 160 locations including 19 surgery centers throughout 11 states. EyeSouth supports its affiliated practices and physician partners with strategic guidance, administrative resources, operating expertise and capital. In September 2022, it received a significant growth investment from Olympus Partners.

RUMA has been serving the Greater Chicago area since 2005, led by the physician team of Dr. Rama Jager, Dr. Harit Bhatt, Dr. Veeral Sheth and Dr. Meena George. URMA provides a suite of services incorporating the latest advancements in retinal, macular and vitreous diseases. It has five locations and six doctors.

This is EyeSouth’s seventh acquisition of the year, third partnership in Illinois and it was acquired by private equity firm Olympus Partners. The terms were not disclosed.

According to the LevinPro HC database, this acquisition is the 79th eye care transaction of the year. In addition to EyeSouth Partners, active acquirers include EyeCare Partners, a portfolio company of Partners Group, which has completed six transactions this year and VSP Ventures LLC, backed by VSP Global, which has completed three acquisitions. Private equity has also had a large presence in the eye care subsector this year, representing 81% of acquirers.
