On February 15, VillageMD announced the acquisition of Healthy Interactions, which helps patients manage chronic conditions through interactive educational programming as part of a stronger patient-provider relationship. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Healthy Interactions is a patient engagement company that improves outcomes of diabetes and other chronic medical conditions for hospitals, clinics and providers. Its services include small group sessions and a digital engagement platform aimed at supporting patients before and after a session. The virtual platform allows patients to track their goals and tap into educational resources, and to connect with healthcare educators. More than 30 million patients around the world have used Healthy Interactions’ programs since 2005.

VillageMD, a subsidiary of Walgreens, provides tools, technology, operations and staffing support for physician groups, independent practice associations and health systems. VillageMD, through its subsidiary Village Medical, is a leading, national provider of value-based primary care services. VillageMD and Village Medical have grown to 19 markets and are responsible for more than 1.6 million patients.

News of this acquisition comes just months after Walgreens Health announced an additional $5.2 billion investment in VillageMD, bringing its stake in the company to 63%. As part of the acquisition, the Healthy Interactions program, which offers virtual, in-person and hybrid sessions, will be available from Village Medical and Village Medical at Walgreens providers in 14 markets by the end of 2022.

This isn’t the first time VillageMD and Healthy Interactions have worked together. The two teamed up in Houston, Texas to roll out a pilot focused on patients with Type 2 diabetes. The program helped patients understand the care journey better and they became more engaged in trusting relationships with their care team. Healthy Interactions’ previous programs resulted in increased medication adherence and reduced costs.
