MEDNAX , Inc. (NYSE: MD), once focused exclusively on managing neonatology and anesthesia practices, is moving to manage the entire patient experience. In August 2014, it acquired MedData, Inc., a revenue cycle management company for an undisclosed price. The plan was to provide management services to facilities and physician groups beyond its then-existing footprint.

A year later, in September 2015, MedData brought aboard Alegis Revenue Group, a national third-party receivables company. Alegis managed more than $3 billion in charges for more than 240 hospitals nationwide. The company’s patient-advocacy approach to eligibility and enrollment cut revenue cycle time from referral to remittance.

Now comes MedData’s acquisition of Duet Health, a patient engagement software developer. Its multi-platform software products (including mobile apps) help hospitals, health systems and providers communicate and engage with their patient populations. Duet Health’s Patient Intelligence Center provides real-time monitoring of every click, transaction and entry. The goal is to create “more meaningful” patient engagement while improving operational effectiveness.

MEDNAX CEO Roger Medel told analysts on the Q1:16 earnings call, “These two acquisitions are just the beginning of a bigger management services offering that we can provide to our hospital partners and to outside physician groups. And we will continue to invest here as well.” Not a coincidence, then that the company announced the Duet Health deal five days later.
