The Physician Medical Groups (PMG) market is an industry that we frequently analyze, and for good reason. Coupled with its high deal volume, the sector is brimming with changing trends such as the growth in the cardiology space or how the size of the practices being purchased has changed over time. According to the LevinPro HC database, between January 1, 2023, and November 30, 2023, there were 2,001 healthcare transactions reported, 478 of them in the PMG sector, accounting for approximately 24% of deals. PE Firms Flock to Dermatology Deals

Dermatology practices remain high on the list of healthcare sectors for private equity investors. Through mid-March, 2017, 12 deals targeting these practices have been announced by eight acquirers. All those acquirers are either private equity firms, or portfolio companies. Thanks to the private nature of these transactions, no financial terms have been publicly disclosed. Of the 17 dermatology deals announced in 2016, six acquirers were private equity firms and five were portfolio companies. What’s Next for Managed Care?

The managed care mega-deals of 2015 have blown up. Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Humana (NYSE: HUM) amicably terminated their $37 billion merger, following a federal judge’s order in January to block the deal on antitrust grounds. The $1 billion termination fee was in the works. A different federal judge blocked Anthem (NYSE: ANTM) and Cigna’s (NYSE: CI) $54.2 billion merger on similar grounds. Things turned ugly quickly, as Cigna declared the deal dead and sued Anthem for the $1.85 billion termination fee, and another $13 billion in damages on behalf of its shareholders. PE Firms Are Big on Dermatology

Dermatology deals are popping up like, well, you can imagine. Five acquisitions have been announced in May 2016 alone, bringing this year’s total dermatology deals to nine, and equal to the number announced in all of 2014.  Those nine deals put this year on track to surpass 2015’s total of 11 deals. Private equity firms or their portfolio companies are by far the busiest players buying up dermatology clinics, accounting for 88% of acquisitions in this space since 2014.
