With AbbVie Inc.’s  (NYSE: ABBV) surprise $87 billion bid for Allergan plc (NYSE: AGN) dominating headlines this week, you’d be forgiven for forgetting Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) just bought Array BioPharma (NASDAQ: ARRY) for $11.4 billion only days before. It’s the pharmaceutical giant’s biggest deal of the year thus far in announced dollar volume, and only second behind the aforementioned transaction. Roche Acquires Spark Therapeutics, Inc. in Another Large Biotech Deal

It’s been a busy year for the biotechnology sector so far, and this week continued the trend. Roche (SIX: RO), the global pharmaceuticals and diagnostics company, acquired Spark Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCE) for $4.3 billion. At $114.50 per share, the price represents a 122% premium to Spark’s closing price on February 22, 2019, and a 19% premium to Spark’s high share price on July 9, 2018. Founded in 2013, Spark Therapeutics develops gene therapies for genetic diseases, including blindness, hemophilia, lysosomal storage disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. Although December is typically one of the slower months in transaction announcements, the eHealth and Biotechnology sectors remained the most active with a total of 27 transactions, growing in proportion compared to December 2017. Biotechnology and e-Health transactions were roughly 19% of all of December 2017’s deals, but they were 28% this December. However, price volume tells a different story.
