Elevance Health Q4 2023 Earnings Snapshot

Elevance Health announced its earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter of 2023 on January 24, 2024. The health insurer and healthcare-services provider, formerly known as Anthem, posted a profit of $856 million, or $3.63 a share, compared with $865 million, or $3.59 a share, during Q4 2022.  The company also announced $42.5 billion in revenue for Q4 2023, a 7% increase from the $39.9 billion in revenue reported for the prior year quarter. The healthcare insurance giant Anthem, Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) is back with a new acquisition. More Competition Coming in Behavioral Health Care

It’s been a wild ride in recent years. Merger and acquisition activity in the Behavioral Health Care sector soared to a record 91 transactions in 2018, an increase of 264% over 2014 (25 deals) and up 60% compared with 2017 (57 deals). The majority of the 2018 deals—63%, in fact—were made by private equity firms or their portfolio companies. For the record, PE firms accounted for 46% of all acquisitions and 24% of the spending in the nine healthcare services sectors last year. M&A in this sector hasn’t been as robust in 2019. Even without a price disclosed, this is one of the biggest deals we’ll probably see in the Behavioral Health Care sector this year. Bain Capital Private Equity and Diamond Castle Holdings are selling Beacon Health Options, the largest independently held behavioral health organization in the country. Centene Acquires WellCare Health Plans

The sleepy Managed Care sector woke up to a big deal last week. Centene Corporation (NYSE: CNC) announced it will acquired WellCare Health Plans (NYSE: WCG) for approximately $17.4 billion. M&A among managed care companies has been dormant since 2015. That’s when, in June,  the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the tax subsidies provided as part of the Affordable Care Act. Forty-four deals were announced that year, not including the two mega-mergers between Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Humana (NYSE: HUM) for $37 billion and between Anthem (NYSE: ANTM) and Cigna (NYSE: CI) for $54 billion.
