Rehabilitation Deals Still Rising, Thanks to Private Equity

The year isn’t over, and the Rehabilitation sector has already equaled last year’s deal total. Thirty-three deals have been made public through November 11, 2016, compared with 33 in all of 2015. Spending is a bit lower at this point in 2016, at $623 million, down 21% compared with last year’s annual total of $799 million. That may change, depending on the number of deals that disclose prices between now and the end of the year. Four private equity firms have made acquisitions in this sector in 2016. Specialty Pharmacy Extends Reach in Healthcare

Genoa, a QoL Healthcare Company, a leading behavioral health specialty pharmacy company, has acquired the behavioral health and residential care services division of Advanced Care Pharmacy Services, including 13 of its pharmacies in Michigan. Genoa is a portfolio company of Advent International. In November 2015, Genoa acquired 1DocWay, the nation’s largest outpatient telepsychiatry provider, for an undisclosed price. Advanced Care Pharmacy Services is a privately-held Alabama-based provider of specialized pharmacy services for a variety of care settings. Advent International Acquires ATI Physical Therapy

Private equity continues to invest in rehabilitation companies. The latest deal, the fifth of five announced in March 2016, is from Advent International, a Boston-based firm with more than $30 billion invested in 310 companies. For an undisclosed price, the firm took a majority interest in ATI Physical Therapy, a portfolio company of KRG Capital. ATI specializes in outpatient rehabilitation and adjacent healthcare services. It operates more than 500 clinics in 19 states, and served nearly 300,000 unique patients in 2015. Read More »
