Medical Device Sector Is Most Active in H1:17

The Medical Device sector has been humming. Granted, it comprises a huge range of things, from hip and knee joints to cardiovascular devices. Since 2016, 176 deals have been announced, and $102 billion has been committed based on 73 disclosed prices. Among the 176 deals, 14 target companies specialize in cardiovascular devices, 14 specialize in orthopedic and spine devices, 10 specialize in aesthetic devices each, and eight specialize in vascular devices, to name a few. The most recent deal, on July 10, was of a company that covered a very interesting niche of medical devices. Medical Device Deals Stay Strong in 2016

Medical Devices is finishing the year on a high note. In fact, as of December 29, 2016, deal volume reached 113 transactions, equal to 2015’s total. Deal value topped off at $61.3 billion, a 111% increase from last year’s total of $29.1 billion. However, one deal accounted for 50% of 2016’s total, and that is Abbott’s (NYSE: ABT) $30.7 billion purchase of St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYSE: STJ), a developer, manufacturer and distributor of cardiovascular medical devices for cardiac rhythm management. When that mega deal is subtracted, we get a dollar value of $30.6 billion, still a 5% climb since last year. A handful of acquirers made a name for themselves this year, such as Stryker Corporation... Read More »

November Sees a Surge in Lab Deals

Four deals in our Laboratories, MRI & Dialysis sector have been announced in the first half of November. That much activity constitutes a surge for this sector, which now stands at 39 deals through all of 2016. With only six weeks left in the year, it seems unlikely that this sector will surpass 2015’s total of 52 deals. On November 1st, Vital Images, Inc., a subsidiary of Toshiba Medical Systems Group, acquired Karos Health for an undisclosed price. Karos Health provides standards-based clinical imaging exchange and cross-enterprise workflow and diagnostic imaging solutions. The combined technologies provide a customer-centric, modular platform that allows hospital systems to solve a... Read More »

March 2016’s Biggest Health Care Deals

Health care companies are still attracting buyers, and those in the services sectors seem to be the hottest. Last month saw healthy deal volume, at 134 transactions. For a year that started slowly for health care mergers and acquisitions, March 2016’s deal volume is only 3% lower than the same month a year ago. Industry sources have noted the dearth of deals across many industries going into March, even though some uncertainties that troubled markets earlier this year, such as China’s economic slow down, haven’t occupied center stage recently. Leverage is not an overwhelming concern, but credit has tightened over the past few months. And with the new, more onerous federal rules regarding... Read More »

Canon Buys Toshiba Medical Systems

Two companies, two strategic plans. That’s what brought Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ) together with Toshiba Corp. (OTCQB: TOSYY) in a deal to acquire Toshiba’s medical device business. Toshiba, which makes laptops, home appliances, nuclear power equipment and more, somehow deemed Toshiba Medical Systems as a non-core asset and decided to sell. For its part, Canon decided earlier this year to diversify beyond cameras and copiers. Canon will pay approximately $5.9 billion for Toshiba Medical Systems, which includes diagnostic imaging systems such as MRI, X-ray and ultrasound equipment. Read More »
