Digital health is hot, if deal volume is any measure (and we think it is). By mid-November, some 195 transactions are already on the books. That total is sure to surpass the 204 deals announced in all of 2018, which set a new record. In our DealSearchOnline database, the eHealth sector has grown in scope from simply electronic health records and revenue cycle management deals to include artificial intelligence and blockchain transactions in recent years. With more than 180 deals announced so far in 2019, the Physician Medical Group sector is roaring toward another strong close. The usual specialties—dental, dermatology and ophthalmology—are still very active, but after 10 to 20 years of consolidation, their trajectories are flattening. The ACA Will Be Repealed. It’s the Replacement That’s Tricky. Donald Trump has transitioned from presidential candidate to president-elect, and has nominated conservative Republican Rep. Tom Price, MD (R-GA) to oversee the Department of Health and Human Services. In the same announcement, healthcare consultant Seema Verma, with ties to Vice President-elect Mike Pence, was nominated to oversee the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The House and Senate each have Republican majorities, although the Senate’s is slim, at 52 to 48, and not filibuster-proof.
