The term “skilled nursing” usually brings to mind senior care facilities. Yet Epic Health Services, a portfolio company of Webster Capital, has built a strong platform of pediatric skilled nursing services since its founding in 2001.The Dallas, Texas-based company announced its fifth acquisition of 2016 in October, one that significantly expands its geographic footprint and adds a new line of services to its pediatric healthcare business. The target, Norcross, Georgia-based Pediatria Healthcare for Kids, provides pediatric home health care services to medically complex children. It operates 29 locations across eight states, offering pediatric private duty nursing and pediatric day healthcare center services, with a team of 1,400 skilled pediatric health care professionals.

Pediatric day healthcare centers is a new line of business for Epic. The centers provide skilled nursing needs, as well as speech, occupational and physical therapy services, in a center-based environment. This transaction also expands Epic’s footprint into three new states, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, while expanding its presence in Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. Terms were not disclosed.

While most of Epic Health’s acquisitions have had some form of pediatric skilled nursing or therapy as a target, the company has branched out a bit in 2016. In August, Epic acquired Pediatric Special Care, a private-duty pediatric care and home medical equipment company in Southfield, Michigan. It’s the only company of its kind in the state, and the acquisition increased Epic’s patient count to nearly 47,000, while expanding its service territory to 18 states.

The private- duty nursing portion of Pediatric Special Care’s business, which makes up approximately 60% of its services, was rebranded as Epic Health Services. The remaining home medical equipment segment, which includes in-home ventilation, oxygen enteral nutrition supplies and apnea monitors, was rebranded as Epic Medical Solutions, a division of Epic Health Services.

Baltimore-based Care Resources, which Epic acquired in April 2016, is another example of its ventures into new territory. The company offers pediatric therapy and early intervention services for children with special needs, and staffs special education teachers and nurses to schools while offering continuing education classes for healthcare professionals.

In May, Epic acquired Virginia’s largest private pediatric therapy provider, Rehabilitation Associates. The Virginia Beach-based company provides occupational, physical and speech therapy, special instruction and service coordination for more than 3,000 children with special needs.

Rehabilitation Associates offers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for children with autism spectrum disorder, which complements the ABA services already being provided by Epic Developmental Services, another division of Epic Health. The acquisition is expected to help Rehabilitation Associates to accelerate its growth in the national arena.

Epic moved into the Las Vegas area in August with its acquisition of Spring View Home Health Care, which offers private duty nursing services for both children and adults as well as therapy, post-operative rehabilitation and skilled nursing services for adults throughout Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City and Pahrump.

Epic Health is just gathering speed, it seems. The company announced five acquisitions in 2015, after posting just one apiece in 2014 and 2013. Integrating new companies may be routine now, but adding a new line of business with the Pediatria Healthcare transaction may give the company pause. For a while.
